Corfu is one of the largest islands in Greece.
The southern side of the island is characterized by low hills as opposed to the north side of the island, characterized by rugged mountains, dominated by Mount Pantokratoras. Corfiot Countryside
Travel to the Corfiot countryside and see the unique olive groves. The cultivation of olives was applied by the Venetians in Corfu. Since then, the locals have developed its cultivation, resulting in the production, especially in recent years, of excellent quality virgin olive oil.
Kalami & Kouloura
At the Northern part of Corfu you will visit kalami and kouloura, the places where both Lawrence and Gerald Durrell lived for many years prior to World War Two. For many people the Durrell’s are Corfu. In the five short years the family lived on the island, they made friends with the locals, found literary inspiration and lived a splendid life, surrounded by nature and Greek hospitality. Gerald Durrell’s much-loved memoir My Family and Other Animals was based on their time here, while Lawrence Durrell’s Prospero’s Cell is a lyrical evocation of the island.
Old Perithia Corfu
If you feel like visiting a mountain, then drive to see Old Perithia village. For years the village prospered but by the 20th century its residents had begun to leave, drawn to the coast by the wealth brought in by tourism. Today the village has heritage status and its 130 houses, many built in Venetian style, lie abandoned in varying states of dereliction. The air is fresh, the views are spectacular and there’s a handful of tavernas serving excellent mountain fare.
Unique Sights & Beaches
Visit in the northern part the unique sights of Canal d’amour, the beach of Peroulades with the unique rocks but also the unique beach of porto timoni named also as the twin beach! A little further down in the area of Paleokastritsa you will be able to swim in crystal clear blue waters and if you decide to do scuba diving you will see a seabed of unique beauty!
South East Coast of Corfu
On the South east coast is the attractive resort town of Benitses, with its lovely shingle beach, while on the west, the hills relax into a flat coastal area dominated by Lake Korission, a salt-water lagoon connected to the sea by a narrow channel and flanked by sand dunes and beaches. A conservation area, Lake Korission provides a unique habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna – from flamingos to tortoises, turtles and snakes.
2 different worlds
Northern & Southern Corfu
The northern and southern part of Corfu are 2 different worlds! Two unique landscapes with a completely different composition. Their only common feature is the olive groves. So if you like sandy beaches prefer South Corfu while if you like snorkeling, then the northern part of the island will be your choice!
