'Corypho' &
Venetian Occupation

Regal and massive, the flourishing Venetian occupation of almost four hundred years is evident all over Corfu. It’s worth mentioning that the name of Corfu, as has prevailed in many European languages, comes from the medieval ‘Corypho’ which, in Greek, means ‘peak’ referring to the two peaks of the old Fortress. Moreover, the huge fortification walls along the coastal road of Mouragia is part of the medieval defensive system of Corfu that the Venetians constructed in order to connect the old Fortress with the new one which they themselves built in the mid 16th century.

Majestic Constructions
that Last for Centuries

Whether you arrive in the city of Corfu by boat or by plane, the beauty of the landscape will be unforgettable. The entrance to the port is next to the old fortress. Majestic constructions that last for centuries. They once housed barracks and today are university buildings. By plane on the other hand you reach one of the most beautiful airports in Greece. Next to the sea and the unique Mouse Island – (local Pontikonisi), is the island’s airport runway. There are not a few visitors who even today come to the island for plane spotting!

Corfu Old Town

The old town of Corfu is full of history. You will walk in the same small streets (which in Corfu are called kantounia) that have been walked for the last 400 years by countless artists, visitors and conquerors. An island that was never under Ottoman rule but was conquered by the Venetians, the British and the French. Each of them left their personal mark on the architecture of the island, on the colors of the houses and in the culture of the locals.
